Improving Soybean Breeding Research with Pan-genomes

Introduction:

Soybean (genus Glycine) is one of the most important global oil and protein crops for both human and animal sustenance . Plant researchers and crop breeders seek to develop soybeans with increased yield that can be grown on limited land, as well as to improve traits like environmental hardiness and disease resistance, in anticipation of increased demand from a growing population and altered cultivation conditions due to a changing climate. Unfortunately, cultivated soybeans have low genetic diversity, which has negative implications for yield and hardiness . Using genomics to develop a deep understanding of soybean characteristics and to identify key traits for further selection in cultivated soybeans and traits that can be incorporated from wild-type soybeans is one of the most valuable tools in breeders’ toolbox.
