Deep plasma proteome profiling reveals biomarker signatures for early detection of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes states

Introduction:

To better understand the molecular transition from prediabetes to Type 2 diabetes (T2D), researchers analyzed plasma from 508 individuals in the localized Białystok PLUS cohort. Utilizing Olink Reveal—a high-throughput proximity extension assay (PEA) technology measuring ~1,000 circulating proteins—the study mapped temporal metabolic signatures during oral glucose tolerance tests.
This deep proteomic profiling successfully identified distinct early biomarkers for impaired glucose metabolism, such as BAIAP2 for general hyperglycemia and RTN4R for prediabetic states. By moving beyond standard clinical metrics, these insights lay a strong foundation for personalized medicine and precision diagnostics in metabolic syndrome.
