Plant researchers and crop breeders seek to develop soybeans with increased yield that can be grown on limited land, as well as to improve traits like environmental hardiness and disease resistance, in anticipation of increased demand from a growing population and altered cultivation conditions due to a changing climate. Unfortunately, cultivated soybeans have low genetic diversity, which has negative implications for yield and hardiness .
